The Fast Metabolism Diet

Fast Metabolism DietThe Fast Metabolism Diet

This is a best selling diet book authored by Haylie Pomroy and featured on Dr. Oz, complete with an A list  celebrity clientele.  (I think I should create a category for this site for those diets featured by Dr. Oz!)

There is a caloric cycling element to this diet (although no calories are counted), so it’s more like a nutrient cycling.

Phase 1 : Two days of mostly fruits and carbs in the way of whole grains (think quinoa and brown rice)

Phase 2:  Two days of mostly dark green veggies and lean proteins such as fish and poultry

Phase 3: Three days of all of the above with the addition of good fats such as avocado, nuts, coconut oil and olive oil

Ms. Pomroy has an impressive list of credentials and described as a ‘Celebrity Nutritionist’.  There are extensive online resources such as Pinterest recipe boards, facebook groups and blogs.  She also sells a shake mix on her website that supports the Fast Metabolism Diet. I checked the ingredients and they look really good, especially compared to other shake mixes.  Definitely worth a look and the cost works out to less than $2 per serving.

Pros and Cons of the Fast Metabolism Diet

Pros

Use of real  whole and healthy foods, lots of it

Plenty of online resources to help you, as well as a smart phone app

No counting calories

Cons

I am always hesitant about a diet guru promoting shakes and supplements

Counting calories or not, on the Phase 1 and Phase 2 days, the calories are very, very  low.

I find the phases and cycles a bit confusing

But certainly I feel this one is worth a try and I would love to hear from people who have done it.  How did you find the switching from phase to phase?

PS The Fast Metabolism Diet cookbook is available by preorder.

The Primal BluePrint

The Primal Blueprint

I wasn’t exactly sure how I should name this because I know it best as Mark’s Daily Apple.  Mark being Mark Sisson and Daily Apple being his amazing blog. But overall, the program he has published and promotes is called The Primal Blueprint.  This program encompasses a whole series of products and services ranging from his blog to supplements and even hosting retreats and conventions for the primal lifestyle.

I am a long time subscriber to the blog and have learned a great deal from that. But getting the book and going all in is another experience altogether.  The Primal Blueprint is not just about what you are eating.  It is a complete blueprint for everything that could touch your health and well being.  Everything is on the table, how much sleep you get, how you move your body and how often, sun exposure, this is a complete lifestyle makeover.

Pros and Cons of The Primal Blueprint

Pros

No processed foods on this eating plan

Addresses more than just the food

Cons

No grains or legumes (Note: this is not a con for Paleo people!)

Supplementation is really pushed on this particular program.

Still, if you have been curious about paleo, this is a great place to start.

Garcinia Cambogia

When Dr. Oz speaks, America not only listens, sometimes they go a little crazy.  That is certainly true for a weight loss supplement called Garcinia Cambogia.

So what is it?  It is a fruit that looks like a small pumpkin that is native to India and parts of Asia.  The word from Dr. Oz is that as a supplement, taking it alone will cause you to drop some pounds with no other changes.  But combine it with diet and exercise and you can almost triple the results from that effort!

I have ordered some from Amazon and will test it myself and report back.  In the meantime, here is the clip from Dr. Oz’s show.

Pros and Cons of Garcinia Cambogia

Pros

All natural fruit extract

Cheap (as long as you don’t get sucked in by the marketing!)

Triples your weight loss efforts

Cons

Many scammers out there selling crap

Not supported by the medical community (except Dr. Oz!)

May react with your medications, so check with your pharmacist or doctor

NOTE – Be sure to only buy Pure Carginia Cambogia extract from a reputable company (Amazon, your pharmacy)
