It seems that a product called Marz Spray  is the latest weight loss offer to spam my mailbox.  I have never been hit this hard!  Have you had any of these emails flood your inbox lately?  I have had all of these and more JUST TODAY!  Check out these crazy headlines:

So I am not saying at all that Marz Sprays is a scam.  But the people who are pushing it out there with those headlines, they are the scam.  Making false promises, no doubt trying to cash in on the New Year resolution crowd.

The only reason that I opened one of the emails to find out what it was is because of the Shark Tank reference.  It is one of my favorite shows and I figured there had to be something to this if they were involved.

And yes, Marz Sprays is a legitimate company that was featured on Shark Tank and got some of their financial backing.  They make various sprays such as vitamin boosters, sleep enhancers, energy boosters and the infamous weight loss spray.  It is simply a spray shot that gives you a high dose of B12 and other supplements known to enhance weight loss efforts.

What is in the Marz Weight Loss Spray?

According to their product information on their site, the Slim Spray contains popular ingredients such as Green Tea, Acai Berry, an assortment of vitamins including B12 and chromium picolinate.  It is also sugar and gluten free.  So this is actually a great supplement for a weight loss regime.  It’s too bad that the crazy internet marketers have got a hold of this and use their tactics to make a legitimate company look bad.

And I tell you, there is not a limited supply.  They sell Marz Spray  on Amazon so if you marz weight loss sprayreally did want to try it you could get one bottle to see if you like it or not.  The scammers that are emailing me are trying to get my credit card number of course so they can send me some kind of automatic shipment of this so called very limited product.  Ha, don’t fall for it!

And honestly, a weight loss spray?  I have been desperate at times, and frankly, I love to try new things in the hopes that one day I really will stumble across that diet miracle cure.  This is a supplement , not a miracle.

Honestly, you are much better off just exercising more and eating healthy.  I’m a huge fanmarz sprays of eating plans along the lines of Ketogenic, Paleo, and Mediterranean.   These eating plans focus on eating real and natural foods and moving more, just like our much thinner ancestors used to do.  Perhaps the Marz spray could be a good supplement, but that is not what those headlines are promising.

Don’t start your year off with this kind of false hope.  Just. Eat. Real. Food.

When I think of the Hamptons, I think of the rich and wealthy lounging in their summer beach homes.  This diet book written by Fred Pescatore, MD is a little bit like that actually!

It is basically a low carb version of the Mediterranean Diet.  The book differentiates itself from other low carb diets in it’s high use of Macadamia nut oil.  Dr. Pescatore recommends this oil over the olive oil that is common in the Mediterranean due  to it’s perfect 1:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids.  Fair enough.  Monounsaturated oils have been shown to raise HDLs (good cholesterol) and lower tryglycerides.

So for those who love the Mediterranean Diet and the fact that the medical community also loves it, but are carbohydrate sensitive, then The Hamptons Diet could have something to offer you.

Where it falls down a little bit for me, is that the recipes that are shared in this book are really high end and somewhat too gourmet for me.  As a working girl, I ain’t got time for that!

Pros and Cons of The Hamptons Diet

Pros

  • The plan eliminates all the junk and bad for you carbs
  • Monounsaturated fats are a mainstay of this diet
  • Your doctor would very likely support this diet

Cons

  • This is not a very budget friendly diet
  • Dr. Pescatore seems overly obsessed with macadamia nut oil

But, if you are looking for a healthier way to do a low carb program, this may the book for you.

It is basically like a juice fast except that for 10 days you drink 60 oz a day of the Master Cleanse Recipe.  The easiest way to do it is to get a big jug and make it either the night before or every morning.

I have to admit that I have tried the Master Cleanse a few times and crashed very quickly.  I had heard that it helps to get the book but I figured why do that when I had the recipe?  Well, because so many of my friends swear by it, I finally did break down and get the book and I’m glad I did.  I actually made it through a full 10 days and lost 18 pounds!

Master Cleanse Recipe and Directions

Please Note:  For a full day’s juice, you will need to make this recipe twice!  Unless you have a large enough jug, then you can just double the recipe. Also the minimum to drink is 60 ounces of recipe, and the maximum is the whole 120 ounces.  So for the first day, try the whole 120 ounces and see how it goes.

  • 60 oz filtered water
  • 12 tbsp Organic Dark Maple Syrup
  • 12 tbsp organic lemon juice (about 6 lemons)
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

Combine all ingredients in a blender (optional) or a large pitcher and stir. That is it!

You may also drink filtered water and mint tea.  Highly recommended is a nightly laxative tea, but that is pretty beyonce master cleanse recipe and directionsmuch it for the 10 days!

Important Note about the Maple Syrup In the book it says the Maple Syrup must be Grade B.  They are no longer graded that way for sale, what you need to look for is the Dark Maple syrup which used to be called Grade B.

Most people quit The Master Cleanse on their first day and so I would highly recommend getting a copy of Raylen Sterling’s ebook.  She walks you through it step by step and gives a lot of extra tips and tricks to make it through.

The Good Things

  • Rapid Weight Loss of 10-15 lbs in 10 days
  • Simple.  make your batch every morning and don’t have to worry about what to eat and how much
  • Inexpensive

The Not so Great

  • You will be very hungry the first couple days
  • Some people will experience fatigue, headaches and even nausea
  • Not sustainable for a long term diet. Yes, there are times when you need to crash off some pounds for an event.  As long as you go into it knowing that if you don’t change your eating habits, the weight will come back afterwards.  Treat it like a jump start to a new way of eating.

The Master Cleanse lemonade recipe itself tastes pretty good and you do get quite a few calories from the maple syrup to sustain you (about 1300 calories a day).

So this is doable, but still, I would pick a 10 day period where there is not too much going on so that you can focus on yourself and even sleep more if needed.

And make sure you do not have a wedding or banquet to attend in the middle of your cleanse!

This is a best selling diet book authored by Haylie Pomroy and featured on Dr. Oz, complete with an A list  celebrity clientele.  (I think I should create a category for this site for those diets featured by Dr. Oz!)

There is a caloric cycling element to this diet (although no calories are counted), so it’s more like a nutrient cycling.

Phase 1 : Two days of mostly fruits and carbs in the way of whole grains (think quinoa and brown rice)

Phase 2:  Two days of mostly dark green veggies and lean proteins such as fish and poultry

Phase 3: Three days of all of the above with the addition of good fats such as avocado, nuts, coconut oil and olive oil

Ms. Pomroy has an impressive list of credentials and described as a ‘Celebrity Nutritionist’.  There are extensive online resources such as Pinterest recipe boards, facebook groups and blogs.  She also sells a shake mix on her website that supports the Fast Metabolism Diet. I checked the ingredients and they look really good, especially compared to other shake mixes.  Definitely worth a look and the cost works out to less than $2 per serving.

Pros

Use of real  whole and healthy foods, lots of it

Plenty of online resources to help you, as well as a smart phone app

No counting calories

Cons

I am always hesitant about a diet guru promoting shakes and supplements

Counting calories or not, on the Phase 1 and Phase 2 days, the calories are very, very  low.

I find the phases and cycles a bit confusing

 

But certainly I feel this one is worth a try and I would love to hear from people who have done it.  How did you find the switching from phase to phase?

This diet was hugely popular in the seventies and eighties and was probably the original low carb diet.   It got lost a bit in the shuffle when the Atkins Diet came out, but then hit a new high when the creator of the Scarsdale Diet (Dr. Herman Tarnower) was scandalously murdered by a jilted lover.

But, we’re not here for the drama, so here is the 14 Day Scarsdale Diet details.

The Scarsdale Diet plan menu is to be followed for 2 weeks only, then you take a break for 2 weeks (while eating healthy!), then go again for 2 more weeks.  You repeat this pattern until you reach your goal weight.

Here is the basic 14 day Scarsdale diet food plan:

  • Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice high protein bread, toasted, coffee or tea (no sugar)
  • Lunch: tomatoes and/or other allowed veggies, tuna, lean meat, eggs or cottage cheese
  • Dinner: fish or shellfish or other lean protein, salad, 1 slice high protein bread, 1/2 grapefruit

Drink plenty of water!  If you follow this for 2 weeks, you can lose up to 20 lbs!

This is really just an overview and it probably seems very restrictive but in actual fact there is plenty of variety.  I actually own the Scarsdale Diet Plan book and I also highly recommend the ebook if you wish to follow the updated Scarsdale Diet.

High Protein Bread: This bread is not that easy to find!  I did find some websites and blogs where they said to just substitute whole grain bread but I don’t think that is what the late doctor had in mind.

I would recommend either making a high protein low carb bread recipe, or ordering this High Protein Bread from Amazon.  You can store it in the freezer and eat is as you need it.

This is a great diet to kick off a weight loss program and the fact that is is only 2 weeks makes it doable.  For the 2 weeks off, follow something sensible and satisfying so that you are then ready to give it another 2 weeks!

Many A-list celebrities have ‘entered’ The Zone to keep their famous figures! What exactly is The Zone Diet?

The Zone Diet works by closely regulating blood sugar levels, keeping our blood sugar in a tight ‘zone’ that helps to burn fat efficiently.  To achieve this, you need to maintain a certain ratio of carbs to proteins to fats every time you eat a meal.  On the surface, it appears to be very similar to any other low carb diet, but having tried it for a few weeks, there is a difference.

For me that difference is simplicity!  I was a science major and I had trouble with this one.  You get ‘Zone Food Blocks’ where each block contains a standard amount of protein, carb and fat.  You get a certain number of blocks to use up for meals and snacks.

First you need to figure out how many blocks you get based on a few factors, then you need to plan out meals that contain those blocks.  You really need the book.  Or if money is no object, you can get Zone meals delivered to your door!

My very first exposure to the Weight Watchers diet plan was as a preteen.  My mother was a member and I watched her weigh and measure her food and lose 30 lbs right before my eyes on the original Weight Watchers diet.

Almost everyone I know has been to a Weight Watchers meeting at least once.    It is quite possibly one of North America’s most popular ‘weigh & pay’ plans for losing weight and the big WW has been around since the 1960’s.

Back then, the Weight Watchers meal plans were very strict with no carbs allowed.  You had to eat fish 5-7 times per week, liver once a week and there was almost zero flexibility. Coming full circle,  this original Weight Watchers diet plan is actually much closer to the way I eat now!

Just like me, Weight Watchers is all grown up and modern now.  They have deep pockets, as is evidenced by the A list celebrities who promote the plan and the TV ads they run in prime locations and time slots.  Weight Watchers is big business, with their own Weight Watchers Foods and Snacks and all kinds of gadgets and gizmos to assist you in reaching your goals.

One thing that is still there is the weekly meeting.  Weather it is in person face to face, or an online weight watchers diet planmeeting on their website,  studies show that meeting attendance and support and camaraderie from fellow members does result in more success for members.

Here are the Pros and Cons of the Weight Watchers Diet Plan:

Pros

  • Group support from others
  • Reasonable, well balanced meals
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle changes
  • Plan is updated constantly
  • Lots of resources such as this Weight Watchers Diet Plan which includes a complete guide and 14 day menu.

Cons

  • Can be cost prohibitive for many people (approximately $40 per month depending on coupons and specials)
  • Some people rely on ‘points’ instead of what is nutritious
  • Most of the foods with the Weight Watchers logo are very processed and so really not that healthy! (Sorry WW, but it’s the truth!).
  • I find the recent plans to be more complicated to follow in contrast to the clear and concise original weight watchers diet.  I guess I need structure!

Having said all that, many many people have been successful on the Weight Watchers program.  Yes, you can do a not healthy program, but if you are really committed to a long term lifestyle change, then choosing the best foods and staying active seems like a great way to reach your goals!

Things You Will Need for Becoming a Successful Weight Watcher

  • A good food scale.  I have had my stainless steel food scale for years and love it. Salter and Ozeri are both Weight Watchers Diet Plangood scales.
  • Measuring cups and spoons.  Weighing and measuring accurately are key to tracking on the Weight Watchers diet plan.
  • If you are not going to join a local group and do the Weigh and Pay, then you will need to get some WW resources.  Amazon has an entire Weight Watchers Resource Page to find everything you might want.
  • Group Support.  Look online for groups to get some help and support.  There are several weight watchers groups on Facebook that cost nothing.  If you can afford to go all in and join a local meeting, then do so.  You can use the Weight Watchers Facebook group for support in between weekly meetings.
