The Virgin Diet

The Virgin DietThe Virgin Diet

Designed by J.J. Virgin, the basic premise of the Virgin diet is that there are 7 foods that are the biggest triggers for all that ails us, including obesity.  These 7 foods are responsible for allergies and other health problems and by eliminating them, we will solve many issues including weight issues.  These 7 foods are:

  1. Soy
  2. Corn
  3. Gluten
  4. Dairy
  5. Sugar and Artificial sweeteners
  6. Eggs
  7. Peanuts

The Virgin Diet program does lay out a very natural and healthy way of eating that could benefit the whole family. It could also be a long term way of eating if one was committed not only to weight loss, but also to eating only the highest quality food.

Week one promises 7 pounds in 7 days, so a nice start to a new way of life!

Pros and Cons of The Virgin Diet

Pros

Extremely healthy foods, lots of fruit and veggies

No weighing and measuring of foods

Online support groups

Cons

Hard to maintain long term unless you are committed to eliminating these 7 items from your diet

They are promoting a product called  ‘The Virgin Diet Shake’

I actually want to try this diet, more as a long term way of eating after I have used some of these other diets to get all my weight off!  If I was to have a ‘perfect diet’ this would be it!  I would love to hear from people who have used this program.

The DASH Diet

DASH DietThe DASH Diet

The DASH Diet was originally a plan of eating used to address high blood pressure.  DASH is an acronym standing for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.  And while DASH is still a great plan to lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol, it has gained an incredible following as a weight loss tool.

There are DASH books, support forums, Pinterest boards with recipes, you name it!

This diet was voted by health experts to be the best overall diet three years in a row!

Pros and Cons of The DASH DIET

Pros

Health Experts on your side!

Well balanced meals, no weird foods or starving so the whole family can follow it

Can be used as a long term, even permanent food plan

Cons

Due to slower (but steady!) weight loss,  it is important to find a support group

You really need the book to figure out exactly what you are doing

There is weighing and measuring of food involved

The Scarsdale 14 Day Diet Menu Plan

Scarsdale 14 Day DietThe Scarsdale 14 Day Diet Menu Plan

This diet was hugely popular in the seventies and eighties and was probably the original low carb diet.   It got lost a bit in the shuffle when the Atkins Diet came out, but then hit a new high when the creator of the Scarsdale Diet (Dr. Herman Tarnower) was scandalously murdered by a jilted lover.

But, we’re not here for the drama, so here is the 14 Day Scarsdale Diet details.

The Scarsdale Diet plan menu is to be followed for 2 weeks only, then you take a break for 2 weeks (while eating healthy!), then go again for 2 more weeks.  You repeat this pattern until you reach your goal weight.

Here is the basic 14 day Scarsdale diet food plan:

  • Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice high protein bread, toasted, coffee or tea (no sugar)
  • Lunch: tomatoes and/or other allowed veggies, tuna, lean meat, eggs or cottage cheese
  • Dinner: fish or shellfish or other lean protein, salad, 1 slice high protein bread, 1/2 grapefruit

Drink plenty of water!  If you follow this for 2 weeks, you can lose up to 20 lbs!

This is really just an overview and it probably seems very restrictive but in actual fact there is plenty of variety.  I actually own the Scarsdale Diet Plan book and I also highly recommend the ebook if you wish to follow the updated Scarsdale Diet.

scarsdale high protein bread

High Protein Bread: This bread is not that easy to find!  I did find some websites and blogs where they said to just substitute whole grain bread but I don’t think that is what the late doctor had in mind.

I would recommend either making a high protein low carb bread recipe, or ordering this High Protein Bread from Amazon.  You can store it in the freezer and eat is as you need it.

Pros and Cons of the 14 Day Scarsdale Diet

The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet

The Good Things

  • Rapid weight loss keeps you motivated
  • Lots of healthy foods to choose from
  • No weighing and measuring of food
  • There are online support sites with help and recipes

And The Bad

  • Very low carb diets can dampen energy levels
  • Can get boring to follow
  • No clear plan for after the 14 day Scarsdale diet

Going Forward with the Update Scarsdale Diet

This is a great diet to kick off a weight loss program and the fact that is is only 2 weeks makes it doable.  For the 2 weeks off, follow something sensible and satisfying so that you are then ready to give it another 2 weeks!

If you want to try this diet, I recommend the ebook.  It’s full of insider information and tips and recipes that are  part of the original book.  Plus you can download it right now and start your diet tomorrow.  Download it right here!

Garcinia Cambogia

garcinia cambogiaGarcinia Cambogia

When Dr. Oz speaks, America not only listens, sometimes they go a little crazy.  That is certainly true for a weight loss supplement called Garcinia Cambogia.

So what is it?  It is a fruit that looks like a small pumpkin that is native to India and parts of Asia.  The word from Dr. Oz is that as a supplement, taking it alone will cause you to drop some pounds with no other changes.  But combine it with diet and exercise and you can almost triple the results from that effort!

I have ordered some from Amazon and will test it myself and report back.  In the meantime, here is the clip from Dr. Oz’s show.

Pros and Cons of Garcinia Cambogia

Pros

All natural fruit extract

Cheap (as long as you don’t get sucked in by the marketing!)

Triples your weight loss efforts

Cons

Many scammers out there selling crap

Not supported by the medical community (except Dr. Oz!)

May react with your medications, so check with your pharmacist or doctor

NOTE – Be sure to only buy Pure Carginia Cambogia extract from a reputable company (Amazon, your pharmacy)

The General Motors Diet

general motors dietThe General Motors (or GM) Diet.

There is a popular belief that GM came up with this diet to help their employees lose weight.  I have not been able to find any concrete evidence of that!  None the less, it is a very popular diet and I did give it a try.

The diet itself is very specific, you eat certain things on certain days, and therefore not a long term diet.  It is designed to be followed for 7 days.  For all your hard work you are rewarded with a 10 to 17 lb weight loss.

Day 1:  All the fruit you want (no bananas or starchy or dried fruit)

Day 2: All the vegetables you want, raw or cooked.  Breakfast includes 1 large baked potato with a pat of butter.

Day 3: All the fruits and vegetables you want (still no bananas!)

Day 4: bananas, skim milk and the ‘GM Wonder Soup’

Day 5: Each meal must consist of beef and tomatoes.  The only other food you can consume is as much of the GM Wonder Soup as you like.

Day 6: Beef and any kinds of vegetables and Wonder Soup, in whatever quantities needed.

Day 7: Brown rice, fruit and vegetables, quantities as needed.

The GM Wonder Soup

I found a couple different variations of this.  Basically it is a vegetable soup made primarily with cabbage, onions, celery and green peppers. I basically made the same soup as The Cabbage Soup Diet and used that.

If you made it through this, you are at least 10 lbs lighter!

Pros and Cons of The GM Diet

Pros

Large rapid weight loss

No measuring foods

Its free!

Cons

Restrictive and boring

Not a balanced diet

All in all, the GM Diet does deliver as long as you commit 100% to it.  Good luck and report your results below in the comments!

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet

Many A-list celebrities have ‘entered’ The Zone to keep their famous figures! What exactly is The Zone Diet?

The Zone Diet works by closely regulating blood sugar levels, keeping our blood sugar in a tight ‘zone’ that helps to burn fat efficiently.  To achieve this, you need to maintain a certain ratio of carbs to proteins to fats every time you eat a meal.  On the surface, it appears to be very similar to any other low carb diet, but having tried it for a few weeks, there is a difference.

For me that difference is simplicity!  I was a science major and I had trouble with this one.  You get ‘Zone Food Blocks’ where each block contains a standard amount of protein, carb and fat.  You get a certain number of blocks to use up for meals and snacks.

First you need to figure out how many blocks you get based on a few factors, then you need to plan out meals that contain those blocks.  You really need the book.  Or if money is no object, you can get Zone meals delivered to your door!

Pros and Cons of The Zone Diet

Pros

You will lose weight

Healthy balanced meals are the norm

There are a lot of recipes and groups online that can help you

It’s free (other than you really need the book!)

Cons

I found it very complicated

To maintain the blocks and stay in the ‘zone’ you really need to weigh and measure everything

If you still want to try it out, get the book! And please come and comment with your experience, maybe it was just me?

The 12 Day Grapefruit Diet Plan

12 Day Grapefruit DietThe 12 Day Grapefruit Diet Plan

The 12 Day Grapefruit Diet Plan (also known as the Grapefruit and Egg Diet) has been around for decades.  I would have to say that it is probably the very first diet I ever went on.

I always knew when my Mom had some event to attend because she would come home from the grocery store loaded up with her eggs and grapefruits! I think she probably got it from Good Housekeeping magazine or Readers Digest, which back then was the news source for all housewives of the day!

Back then it seemed like there was something magical about the combination of eggs, grapefruit and black coffee.  But it seems that really it was a combination of being low in calories along with the grapefruit, which current studies are showing to be quite useful in promoting weight loss!

One word of caution:  If you are taking any medications at all, ask your pharmacist if it is one of those medications that can interact with grapefruit.

Basic Egg Grapefruit Diet Menu12 Day Grapefruit Diet Plan

  • Breakfast is the same every day: 2 eggs with 2 slices bacon, 1/2 grapefruit, 1 c black coffee or tea
  • Lunch: This would normally be a salad, beef, chicken or fish, 1/2 grapefruit, black coffee or tea
  • Dinner: Same as lunch: salad, beef, chicken or fish, 1/2 grapefruit, black coffee or tea

You stay on it for 12 days, take a 2 day break and the do it all over again.

Pros and Cons of Egg and Grapefruit Egg Diet

Dash Go Rapid Egg Cooker

The Good Things

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Gluten Free and Low Carb
  • Very easy to follow as you don’t count calories, carbs or points

And The Bad

  • Very low calorie diets make some people tired and lethargic
  • Boring and restrictive!
  • Grapefruit can react with many medications – be sure to check!

Norpro 1280 Stainless Steel Grapefruit Spoons, Set of 4

Unlike many diets, you don’t need much in the way of special ingredients or kitchen equipment to do this.

Grapefruit spoons are nice to have and so is an egg cooker. I really love my Dash Go!  It cooks my eggs exactly how I like them which is in the picture above.  Firm whites but semi soft in the middle.  Yummy!

I would microwave a few days worth of bacon for the breakfast (lay bacon on a some paper towels and cover with more layers of paper towels and nuke for about 5 minutes).

And that’s really it!

The Atkins Diet Plan

atkinsThe Atkins Diet Plan

The Atkins Diet Plan is considered by many to be the King of Low Carb diets.  It was and still is the go to plan when your doctor tells you to cut the carbs.

Dr. Atkins created this diet in the sixties, but it really became part of the popular diet culture in 1972 when he published his first book Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution. Other Atkins books have come out since then, but this book with his original Atkins diet program has always remained my favorite and I still have it on my shelf.

It was revolutionary in that his protocol limited carbohydrates, while protein and fat were unlimited.  The goal was to get into ketosis, which turned your body into a ‘fat burning machine’. This went against everything that doctors were recommending at the time and Dr. Atkins was maligned as a quack and even dangerous.   Fast forward three and four decades later and we find out that the good doctor was right!  From his original Dr Atkins food plan has sprung an enormous low carb industry.

Where do you begin on the Atkins Diet Program?

There are four phases depending on where you are in your weight loss journey.  But everyone starts out on Atkins diet Induction, which limits you to 20 grams of carbs per day.  It is not uncommon for people to rapidly lose up to 20 pounds in 2 weeks on the Induction phase. (I have done this myself!)

I used to tell people to start their journey by visiting the Atkins site.  The only place you should stop on that site now is the Induction instructions.  Why do I say that?  Sadly, since Dr. Atkins passed away, the site has become overly commercial.  They push low carb bars, shakes and snacks, which are basically replicating the very foods that made us overweight and unhealthy in the first place!  We are not learning how to eat real foods and change our ways in the way that Dr. Atkins originally intended.

My recommendation is that you use the books that Dr. Atkins wrote in the early years as your guide.  You won’t be spending a lot of money and you will learn to do Atkins they way it was intended.

Pros and Cons of The Atkins Diet Progam

PROS

  • Rapid weight loss on Induction to kick start your diet
  • There are plenty of online support communities and recipe sites available, mostly free.
  • No weighing and measuring required as long as you are diligent about limiting your carbs.
  • Basically free, unless you choose to buy books and products

CONS

  • Some people report bad breath, especially the first 2 weeks on Induction
  • Induction is tough, you are eating basically meat, fat and vegetables, no fruits.

I think that the Atkins diet plan is worth a look and I personally know many people who have had success with a low carb protocol. More and more I am hearing of doctors putting their diabetic patients on an Atkins low carb diet.

One of the things that I have always appreciated about being on a low carb Atkins diet is how easy it is to follow when traveling or eating out.  You can always get a steak or chicken breast and a salad wherever you go.

What Do You Need for Success on the Atkins Diet Plan?Atkins Diet Plan

  • The most important thing is a way to count carbs as keeping carbs below 20 per day is essential.  I still have my old Atkins Carb Counter and still refer to it.  I’m sure there are smart phone apps now but I’m kind of old school.
  • Group Support is always a good thing.  There are many Low Carb facebook groups out there and there is even once called Old School Atkins!
  • Honestly, other than maybe picking up a couple of the older used Atkins diet books from Amazon, that is pretty much all you need!

Weight Watchers Diet Plan – All Grown up!

weight watchers diet planWeight Watchers Diet Plan

My very first exposure to the Weight Watchers diet plan was as a preteen.  My mother was a member and I watched her weigh and measure her food and lose 30 lbs right before my eyes on the original Weight Watchers diet.

Almost everyone I know has been to a Weight Watchers meeting at least once.    It is quite possibly one of North America’s most popular ‘weigh & pay’ plans for losing weight and the big WW has been around since the 1960’s.

Back then, the Weight Watchers meal plans were very strict with no carbs allowed.  You had to eat fish 5-7 times per week, liver once a week and there was almost zero flexibility. Coming full circle,  this original Weight Watchers diet plan is actually much closer to the way I eat now!

Just like me, Weight Watchers is all grown up and modern now.  They have deep pockets, as is evidenced by the A list celebrities who promote the plan and the TV ads they run in prime locations and time slots.  Weight Watchers is big business, with their own Weight Watchers Foods and Snacks and all kinds of gadgets and gizmos to assist you in reaching your goals.

One thing that is still there is the weekly meeting.  Weather it is in person face to face, or an online weight watchers diet planmeeting on their website,  studies show that meeting attendance and support and camaraderie from fellow members does result in more success for members.

Here are the Pros and Cons of the Weight Watchers Diet Plan:

Pros

  • Group support from others
  • Reasonable, well balanced meals
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle changes
  • Plan is updated constantly
  • Lots of resources such as this Weight Watchers Diet Plan which includes a complete guide and 14 day menu.

Cons

  • Can be cost prohibitive for many people (approximately $40 per month depending on coupons and specials)
  • Some people rely on ‘points’ instead of what is nutritious
  • Most of the foods with the Weight Watchers logo are very processed and so really not that healthy! (Sorry WW, but it’s the truth!).
  • I find the recent plans to be more complicated to follow in contrast to the clear and concise original weight watchers diet.  I guess I need structure!

Having said all that, many many people have been successful on the Weight Watchers program.  Yes, you can do a not healthy program, but if you are really committed to a long term lifestyle change, then choosing the best foods and staying active seems like a great way to reach your goals!

Things You Will Need for Becoming a Successful Weight Watcher

  • A good food scale.  I have had my stainless steel food scale for years and love it. Salter and Ozeri are both Weight Watchers Diet Plangood scales.
  • Measuring cups and spoons.  Weighing and measuring accurately are key to tracking on the Weight Watchers diet plan.
  • If you are not going to join a local group and do the Weigh and Pay, then you will need to get some WW resources.  Amazon has an entire Weight Watchers Resource Page to find everything you might want.
  • Group Support.  Look online for groups to get some help and support.  There are several weight watchers groups on Facebook that cost nothing.  If you can afford to go all in and join a local meeting, then do so.  You can use the Weight Watchers Facebook group for support in between weekly meetings.

There are so many Weight Watchers Diet Plan products available
